Portrait & Figurative Painting PT 600E

$495

with Fred Danziger

Join renowned realist painter Fred Danziger for this portrait and figurative painting course in PAFA’s historic studios! Work from models to learn the essential elements of figurative realism: drawing fundamentals, composition, color, and accurate representations of light, form, and space. Weekly demonstrations will address effective preparation of palette and lighting, as well as both grisaille underpainting and alla prima oil painting techniques. Instruction will focus on portrait subjects, including at least one semi-nude figure in an environment, and will address topics of hair, hands, and likeness; however, other genres and conceptual interests may be pursued. Students will have the option of trying the variety of media demonstrated by the instructor or working in their own preferred techniques. Whether you are a beginning, recommencing, or experienced artist, this course will offer valuable instruction on both the “how-to” and “why-to” aspects of figurative painting.

Project 1 (4-weeks): Indirect Painting with Live Model

  • Creating linear underdrawing
  • Applying a base layer of paint with monochrome washes.
  • Applying finish color using glazes, opaque, and semi-opaque (velatura) layers.

Project 2 (3-weeks): Tonal Painting with Live Model

  • Developing a painting using a wipe-out technique from an imprimatura base

Project 3 (5-weeks): Experimental Media & Independent Projects with Live Model

  • Work from the live model or alternative sources, including your own photos
  • Optional media such as gouache, casein, egg tempera, monotype and cold wax will be demonstrated.
  • A variety of approaches will be presented, from pure realist to post-impressionist, within the context of figurative and portrait subjects

NOTE: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $625
