Join Tony Rosati, Chair of the PAFA Print Department, and accomplished watercolorist in this live Zoom workshop designed for those with little or no experience in watercolor. Acquire a thorough grounding in basic watercolor materials and techniques, including papers, brushes and pigments, as well as transparent and opaque painting methods. Gain the the confidence to continue to work with watercolor beyond the workshop. Take the plunge; a lifeguard will be on duty!

Plein Air Painting In Cape May (OUTDOOR) PT 605CM

Join Joe Sweeney for an outdoor, in-person, plein air painting retreat in beautiful Cape May, New Jersey! Experience small town hospitality while painting Cape May Point, the Cove with sweeping vistas, Cape May Lighthouse, and Sunset Beach. Instruction includes tips on choosing a prime location, reading the weather and light at a particular time of day, and setting up a landscape palette.  Instruction is geared towards oil, acrylic and pastel, but experienced watercolorists are welcome. Health-safety measures, including masking and social-distancing, will be practiced.

Make an Artist Book in a Day! (ONLINE) IN 615ED_ON

Combine story and sculpture in the inventive form of the artist book. Come with text (a story or personal narrative) and images (photos or drawings) or an idea for imagery. Assemble your book by learning basic book structures and using techniques to add your text and imagery, such as packing tape transfers, photocopy transfer, inkjet prints, matte medium transfers, and watercolor transfers. Apply these techniques, or add your own, to complete your own fully-realized artist book by the end of this workshop!

Al Gury, Chair of PAFA’s Painting Department and noted author of Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice, presents this in-depth approach to the skills, materials, colors, history, and techniques of direct landscape painting.

Working from photographs, master works, or available on-site images, learn concepts that will not only improve your landscape painting but also grow your in confidence in your artistic practice. Video demonstrations, images, and written instructions on Canvas will be supplemented by weekly Zoom discussions and critiques. Oil painting will be the primary focus, but all media are welcome.

NOTE: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $525

Portrait Painting & Drawing (ONLINE) PT 602E_ON

An in-depth approach to portrait painting from the Chair of PAFA’s Painting Department and noted author of Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice. Investigate the structure of the human head through drawings and painted studies. Progress to finished paintings and address issues of likeness, composition, space and texture. Learn to better see and understand color to mix it more successfully – a useful skill for painting any subject matter. Includes weekly step-by-step painting demonstrations, assignments that target each important issue of painting a portrait, critiques and weekly Zoom meetings every Sunday, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. All levels welcome.

Learning Objectives

This dynamic online course will address all aspects of portrait painting and drawing, including:

  • Students will learn the traditions and history of portraiture
  • Students will learn portrait structure and anatomy
  • Students will learn how to achieve a good likeness
  • Students will learn alla prima (direct) painting techniques
  • Students will learn to use the materials and color palettes for effective portrait painting
  • Students will learn to use the materials for effective portrait drawing inlcuding pastel
  • Students will learn to paint portraits from both life and from photo reference

Drawing & Illustrating from Reference Materials (ONLINE) IL 600ED_ON

Calendar Next available session starts May 24, 2021 at 1 pm, runs for 6 weeks

Photographs, reference books, and online sources are great tools for the artist/illustrator when used effectively. Learn how to derive the information you need from photos without copying, to establish a light source and create volume and atmosphere from the imagination, and to convey the volume and gesture of figures taken from photographs.  Subject matter will include people, animals, and landscapes from images provided by the instructor or from personal source material.  Instruction will focus on drawing media, with the option to finish projects in color.  Avoid both copyright infringement and the pitfalls of working from photos with helpful advice from a professional in the illustration industry.
