Color for Painters (ONLINE) IN 604CP_ON

An in-depth approach to understanding and mixing color for oil painting from the Chair of PAFA’s Painting Department and noted author of Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice. Explore history, palettes, mixing and application for still life, portrait, interior spaces and landscape through a series of studio paintings.  Includes videos, lectures and assignments with regular instructor feedback.  Weekly Zoom meetings with be held every Sunday, 1 - 2 p.m., beginning July 11.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will gain an understanding of the history and evolution of color in painting
  • Students will gain an understanding of theoretical and critical approaches to color
  • Students will gain an understanding of the practical applications of color mixing, gradations, temperature and palettes

An in-depth approach to portrait painting from the Chair of PAFA’s Painting Department and noted author of Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice. Investigate the structure of the human head through drawings and painted studies. Progress to finished paintings and address issues of likeness, composition, space and texture. Learn to better see and understand color to mix it more successfully – a useful skill for painting any subject matter. Includes weekly step-by-step painting demonstrations, assignments that target each important issue of painting a portrait, critiques and weekly Zoom meetings every Sunday, 3 - 4 p.m., beginning July 11.  All levels welcome.

Learning Objectives:

This dynamic online course will address all aspects of portrait painting and drawing, including:

  • Students will learn the traditions and history of portraiture.
  • Students will learn portrait structure and anatomy.
  • Students will learn how to achieve a good likeness. Students will learn alla prima (direct) painting techniques.
  • Students will learn to use the materials and color palettes for effective portrait painting.
  • Students will learn to use the materials for effective portrait drawing inlcuding pastel.
  • Students will learn to paint portraits from both life and from photo reference.

Al Gury, Chair of PAFA’s Painting Department and noted author of Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice, presents this in-depth approach to the skills, materials, colors, history, and techniques of direct landscape painting.

Working from photographs, master works, or available on-site images, learn concepts that will not only improve your landscape painting but also grow your in confidence in your artistic practice. Video demonstrations, images, and written instructions on Canvas will be supplemented by critiques and weekly Zoom discussions every Sunday, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., beginning July 11. Oil painting will be the primary focus, but all media are welcome.

Oil Painting All Levels (ONLINE) PT 601E_ON

This comprehensive oil painting class presents a wealth of information for students at all levels. Weekly instruction in the form of online video demonstrations, illustrated lessons, and live Zoom sessions is available in the student’s choice of beginner, intermediate, or advanced modules. Students can stay with a single level to progressively build their skills, or they can explore all the levels to pick-and-choose the lessons that best fit their interests or specific needs. The beginner’s module covers basics of alla prima and direct painting. Intermediate instruction focuses on color and the introduction of a wider range of painting methods. Advanced students learn to produce a tonal under-painting, glaze, scumble, and apply a velatura.

A weekly Zoom meeting will be held every Tuesday, 1 - 2:30 p.m., beginning July 6.

Note: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $525.

Learning Objectives:

 Beginner Module

  • Introduce alla prima painting techniques.
  • Purpose and how to use a selection of basic materials.
  • Familiarity with the “feel” of oil paints and how to manipulate them.
  • Introduction of a limited palette of colors, their properties, and effect in mixtures.
  • Elements of chiaroscuro and its use in realistic painting.
  • Realistic painting of elemental geometric forms.

 Intermediate Module

  • Demonstrate several methods of starting a painting (wipe-out, grisaille, imprimatur, etc.).
  • Color theory with emphasis on complementary and analogous color schemes.
  • Introduce broader range of colors, including transparent pigments.
  • Physical color blending methods.
  • In-depth study of painting mediums and oils and their use.

 Advanced Module

  • The grisaille
  • Optical color mixing with glazes, velaturas, and scumbles
  • Overview of ingredients and recipes for transparent painting techniques
  • Color as a spatial symbol and symbol of illumination
  • Psychology of color
  • Compositional techniques (golden rectangle, composition grids, element relationships and unity)

Oil Painting in Layers: Achieving Luminous Color & Depth (ONLINE) PT 600EL_ON

The skill of building multiple layers of paint over an underpainting is as relevant today as it was in the earliest use of oil paint by Northern European artists, who recognized its tremendous potential toward achieving luminous optical effects.  Elevate the color and realism of your own work by understanding characteristics of pigment and employing a broad range of layering techniques.  Learn to work with various underpainting methods, from achromatic and monochromatic to limited and full range color.  Foundational color principles and application techniques will be demonstrated in aqueous, acrylic, and oil paint.  Subject matter will vary in instructor demonstrations and will be left to students’ personal choice for home study.
