IN 609YL Master Class with Ying Li: Observation & Imagination - Painting the Figure

$395

with Ying Li

Abstract and representational artists of all levels are invited to explore techniques and concepts in painting with an emphasis on individual development of style, theme and expression. Working from the life model in an interior arrangement, discover how an objective image can be transformed into a personal statement through the process of painting and engaging your imagination. Investigate the metaphorical meaning in figure painting through representational and abstract approaches. Individual and group critique, discussion and a PowerPoint presentation of works from old masters and contemporary artists will complement studio activity.

Born in Beijing, China, Ying Li graduated from the Anhui Teachers University (1974-77) where she taught 1977-83. She immigrated to the United States in 1983 and received an MFA from Parsons School of Design, New York, in 1987. She is a painter and the Phlyssa Koshland Professor of Fine Arts at Haverford College known for her highly energetic, on-site landscapes that simultaneously describe direct visual experience and pure abstraction. Her uncompromising sense of personal vision combined with complete abandon in the possibilities of paint make her work style the epitome of painterliness. Ying Li lives and works in New York City and Haverford, PA. View the artist’s work at www.yinglistudio.com.

IN 605JM Landscape Painting: Beyond the Photo with John MacDonald

$850

with John MacDonald

Calendar Jun 1, 2020 at 9 am, runs for 1 week

Among representational artists, there has been an endless battle between those who paint from life and those who use photographic reference. But it’s a misplaced battle. The source of the visual information we use to paint is irrelevant. The real problem lies not in painting from life or photos but whether we’re simply copying what we see as opposed to using the information as a springboard for creating the paintings we want. In this 5-day workshop, participants will work in the studio from photographic reference of the landscape, using it to create paintings of different value keys, color keys, times of day, and seasons of the year. We’ll break down the information in photos, analyze it, and use it to create tonal sketches, change color palettes, and create paintings based on multiple images, memory, and imagination. Each day will include a lecture and demonstration followed by painting with one-on-one instruction.

For intermediate to advanced painters

Calendar Jun 15, 2020 at 9 am, runs for 1 week

Brooklyn-based painter and PAFA alum Christine Lafuente considers her paintings “poetic responses to visual experience.” Responding to the still life motif, learn how to build an oil painting directly, with the emphasis on color. The workshop will begin with a painting demonstration, followed by painting sessions in which students will be guided through a series of focused procedures: composing a painting and establishing tonal design, mixing color, achieving harmony and palette organization, applying large color masses, and using principles of oil viscosity to build form into wet-into-wet painting.
