PT 630EW Gouache Painting

Learn the fundamentals of painting with gouache, an opaque watercolor paint. Painters of all levels will fall in love with it as a portable, fast-drying, and easy-to-clean-up alternative to oils – great for travel or limited working time and space. Explore color and painting techniques through still life and outdoor views.

Learning Objectives

• Develop paint application techniques for fluidity and control, with opaque and wash applications.

• Gain the ability to mix color and to predict its effects.

• Recognize and promote gouache’s characteristics and learn how to problem-solve with the material.

• Learn to incorporate principles of line, value, color and space for a greater command of the medium.

• Work from still life and window views to learn how to representationally depict a variety of subject matter and to recognize abstract concepts.

• Become familiar with artists’ techniques for selecting and preparing surfaces, as well as basic methods of displaying paintings for exhibition.

(Tuition includes $20 materials fee, which covers most materials.)

The natural world is an infinite and fantastic source of inspiration for the artist, and the versatility and luminosity of watercolor make it the perfect means of expression. Learn essential drawing and watercolor techniques to create both quick field sketches and detailed, finished artworks. Subject matter will include flowers, plants, animals and landscapes. Reference images will be gathered through observational sketches and photography. An ideal workshop for those interested in both the fine arts and the illustration field.

Join Joseph Sweeney on a plein air painting getaway in scenic Donegal, Ireland, homeland of Joe’s ancestors, the Mac Sweeney’s! Located along the breathtaking, unspoiled northwest coast of Ireland, Donegal’s high sea cliffs offer sweeping vistas ideal for plein air painting! Draw and paint historic Donegal Castle, the spectacular Slieve League Cliffs, and St. John’s Point Lighthouse with instruction will focus on oil, acrylic, and pastel; experienced watercolorists also welcome. Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements.

Capture the island’s charm and beauty at diverse settings, be inspired by the work of master artists at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, explore the island, and relax on the beach! While instruction will focus on watercolor, all media are welcome.
