Pre-College: Drawing I, DR 710ED

Come build your drawing ability and develop your portfolio for college. Students will learn the fundamental principles of drawing as we learn to use visual tools to help us translate the 3D world into 2D art. We will learn the characteristics and limitations of drawing materials and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the study of proportions, perspective, light & shadow, line, tone, gesture, and figure/ground relationships. Time spent on each drawing will expand throughout the class to develop a more complex treatment of form, value, composition, surface, and design. 

Students are responsible for bring supplies from Materials List

Pre-College programs will be in-person to safely support young artists. All participants are required to be vaccinated and boosted (if eligible). PAFA will be limiting classroom density and deep cleaning all areas. We're excited to be a space of creative expression for teens!

Full Course

Pre-College: Illustration: The Art of the Concert Poster, DR 710MI

Explore illustration as a counterpart to music through the art of the concert poster. Students will experiment with a variety of hands-on methods to develop imagery that interprets the lyrical content of their favorite artists. Spontaneous and stream of consciousness drawing and lettering exercises will be employed to invent narratives from instrumental music. The history of the concert poster will provide context and serve as inspiration for the students own projects.

Please review the required materials list and be prepared to bring these materials to class. 

This course cannot be taken for college credit.

Come explore the vibrant possibilities of oil painting through PAFA’s time honored methods. In this course learn materials and techniques including painting supports, brushes, historical and contemporary oil mediums, and their preparations. Discussions and demonstrations will include topics such as paint chemistry, color mixing of prismatic hues and earth tone colors as well as the additive and subtractive color systems. Painting from a variety of subjects including the still life and the cityscape will allow for a development and understanding of the two-dimensional visual language.

Pre-College: Drawing from Observation: Building on Fundamentals, DR 705EH

Students with foundational drawing experience as well as beginners will focus on building their observational skills. Using the still-life, cityscape and nude model as subjects, various visual tools will be used to help see relationships between objects and shapes. In addition, students will learn the characteristics and limitations of the picture plane to gain a better understanding of what it means to draw on the flat surface. Students will become aware of historical and contemporary drawing materials and techniques giving them insight to historical drawings and their artists

Note: This class includes nude models, and $25 model fee.

Pre-College: Drawing for Comics, DR 723EC

In this course, students will be taught cartooning basics, studying drawing and inking techniques using a variety of professional tools. They will also be taught the language of sequential art (comics). Students will write a story based on real life or imagination, then design characters and environments to be used as they transform that story into a short-form comic. 

Students should be prepared with supplies from the required materials list.

Pre-College: Watercolor, PT 710WP

Explore the vibrant and subtle possibilities of watercolor painting. Learn the fundamentals of the medium through transparent and opaque painting methods. Work from still life, old master photographs, and the cityscape. All levels welcome.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students learn the properties and proper use of watercolor paint, paper and brushes.
  • Students will learn observational painting techniques and stages of building a painting.
  • Students will learn to organize visual information in cohesive and expressive compositions.
  • Students will be able to render light, space and texture in watercolor.
  • Students will learn the basic concepts of color theory.
  • Students will learn to see color in various environments.
  • Students will strive for personal expression through use of a range of watercolor techniques and development of unique palettes.

Pre-College: Portfolio Bootcamp

Calendar Next available session starts Aug 8, 2022 at 10 am, runs for 1 week

Learn how to develop a portfolio that will wow any art school admissions committee. Start the week with a portfolio review by PAFA's admissions team and learn where you are excelling and where you could strengthen your presentation. Then spend the rest of the week focusing on developing observational art skills and working with your teacher develop pieces that directly address the needs of your portfolio. This class is perfect for juniors and seniors getting ready to apply, as well as freshman and sophomores getting a head start on their applications.

Additional sessions will go over the art school application process, what makes a great portfolio, how to photograph your at for your portfolio, and what to consider when choosing a school.

This class cannot be taken for college credit.

Required materials list will be posted here in May, and will be emailed to registered students two weeks before the start of class.
