Discover the vibrancy and realism you can achieve with color pencil in this live Zoom class! Topics include descriptive and expressive line quality, color relationships, cross-hatching and layering, capturing light and volume, and working on colored and textured papers. Subjects will include still life, the portrait, and master copies. Basic drawing experience required.

Écorché is the three-dimensional study of human form by developing the bone and muscle structures beneath the skin. Working from the skeleton, students will model the underlying forms in clay on an armature. Excellent for both draftspersons and sculptors interested in a detailed study of human anatomy.

Note: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $525.

Sundays, 9 am - 12 pm

Enjoy plein air drawing of the clothed/costumed model in summer light and greenery. The class will center around line, light and form using monochromatic media. Experiment with a number of strategies for conceptualizing and building the drawing in order to capture what you see. Essential anatomy, drapery, and working with the features of the face will be covered. Drawing experience is helpful, but not required.  Easy-to-access Philadelphia locations with restrooms and other amenities may include the Rose Garden, areas around the Philadelphia Art Museum, Lloyd Hall on Boathouse Row, and Fairmount Park.  Note: Students are responsible for their own transportation. Tuition includes  a $25 model fee.

Ease into Oils Workshop

Saturday & Sunday, 9 am - 5 pm

Want to paint but don't know where to begin? This two-day structured workshop makes it painless and easy to ease into oil painting. Begin with a black-and-white painting (just like drawing) to become familiar with painting tools and materials. Be introduced to color with a simple earth-palette painting. Move on to a brighter palette, and then top off the weekend by completing a painting in a full palette of colors. This course will utilize still life subject matter. Drawing experience recommended.

This course is for those who are new to figure drawing or who haven’t done it in a while. Methods will be introduced for gauging proportions and shapes along with study of basic anatomic structure and figure dynamics. Students will execute short, gestural drawings, as well as more developed extended studies, in order to build skills and knowledge.

NOTE: This course is available for 1.5 undergraduate credits for $775.

Realistic Still Life Painting

Still life is a fascinating and useful introduction to oil painting, offering opportunities to explore color mixing, varied paint application methods, and techniques for creating light, shadow, and volume to impart a sense of realism.  Experienced artists will appreciate the genre as a means of both growing their skills and experimenting with composition and subject matter to suggest ideas or meaning.  Instruction will focus on selecting objects and arranging compositions, establishing lighting to create focus and drama, and applying and blending oil color to create volume and painterly effects.   

Learning Objectives

  • Students will learn about still life composition
  • Students will learn how to choose elements to create an interesting still life composition 
  • Students will learn how to settle lighting to create an interesting focus point and drama in the still life 
  • Students will learn how to apply and blend oil painting color to create volumetric painterly effects

Drawing the Urban Environment (Outdoor)

Draw Philadelphia’s picturesque historic and commercial architecture, using fundamental observational drawing techniques to capture the world around you.  Learn simple methods for applying the principles of linear and atmospheric perspective to your drawings, giving them dimension and depth. Students at all experience levels are welcome, with instruction designed to appeal both to those who enjoy portraying landscape subjects in the open air and to students seeking to hone their basic drawing skills. This course takes place in easy-to-access Central Philadelphia and University City locations. Restrooms are available near all sites.  Note: Students are responsible for their own transportation.

Painting Over the Line, Summer Session 2 (Online)

Take your work to the next level under the guidance of artist/critic/mentor Kassem Amoudi in this live Zoom class.  Expert instruction and advice will push you to explore new possibilities and work more intuitively, allowing unplanned marks and passages to become artistic breakthroughs.  Paint from personal subject matter to find your own visual language, informed by examples from contemporary and modern art. Painting experience recommended.  Kassem will begin each class with a slide presentation/lecture focusing on how master artists through history have addressed color, harmony, focal points, space, mark making, paint application, and more, and how to apply these concepts to your own work.
