Oil Painting Materials & Techniques (ONLINE) IN 601E_ON

Discover how great oil paintings are made in this fascinating examination of artists’ materials from the pre-Renaissance to the present day.  Explore and complete traditional underpainting techniques, clear and translucent layering methods, and wet-into-wet alla prima painting in this combination of Zoom, demo, and hands-on class. Learn about artists’ palettes, the development of colors and mediums, and the mass production of art materials, as well as display, storage, and health issues. Weekly PowerPoints on a variety of subjects related to painting will be given. Some experience and oil painting materials required. This course will take place live via Zoom (See materials list for more information).

Learning Objectives

  • Dispel any misinformed, bad advice you might have collected over the years.
  • Familiarize you with the best of traditional and newer materials, and how to use them to achieve your artistic vision.
  • Investigate the compatibility and consequences of the materials you are using.
  • Learn terms related to art and making art.
  • Distinguish the materials used in cave, tomb, fresco, tempera, encaustic, oil, acrylic, and resin painting.
  • Identify what toxic materials are used by artists, how they are exposed. Learn the risk factors, effects on our bodies, and safety measures.
  • Learn the difference, advantages and disadvantages of stretcher bars and strainers, linen & cotton, natural wood and engineered wood products, metals, parchment, paper, Mylar, hide glue, PVA, polymer emulsions, gesso, oil and acrylic grounds, tempera, oil paint and brushes, mediums, varnishes, framing skills and storage strategies.

Develop a practical understanding of human anatomy using Old Master drawings and other photo references with esteemed PAFA professor, John Horn.  With demonstrations and critiques in real time via Zoom, learn proportion, skeletal framework, superficial muscles, and the movement of the figure, developing a vocabulary of form to make a convincing figure drawing.  Live Zoom sessions will be held every Wednesday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. (See materials list for more information)

Figurative Painting (ONLINE) PT 600E_ON

Calendar Jul 8, 2020 at 1 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Join renowned realist painter and PAFA alum Fred Danziger from his studio via Zoom for this live figurative painting course!  Whether working from good photo sources or a live model, the essential elements of figurative realism remain the same.  Composition, color, and accurate representations of light, form and space are the starting points for achieving our individual goals as artist.  Demonstrations will address effective set up of workspace, palette, and lighting, choosing a good photo source, as well as grisaille underpainting and alla prima painting techniques.  Discussion and questions will be invited.  Students will then work independently from a willing family member model or photo references, with individual critiques from the instructor.  Additional resources will be available through the Canvas online learning platform including art historical examples and technical advice addressing the use of black and white grounds, using a grid with transparent overlays for working with photo references and more.  Live Zoom sessions will take place every Wednesday, 1 - 4 p.m.

Join Tony Rosati, Chair of the PAFA Printmaking Department for an overview of important prints and books spanning the 15th to the 21st centuries.  Learn about artists in their context and the evolution of various printmaking mediums.  View and discuss traditional and contemporary milestone prints and books from the collections of the PAFA museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress.

Mindful Art-Making in Challenging Times (ONLINE) IN 750EH_ON

Cultivating mindfulness, or wakefulness, allows you to be fully present and aware of your actions, without feeling distracted and overwhelmed by other thoughts or outside influences.  Art-making is a natural way of practicing mindfulness, and is especially important in these challenging times. Mindful art-making has been shown not only to reduce stress and improve communication skills, but also to benefit those suffering from memory loss, depression, or PTSD.  Discover how creativity can enrich your daily life.  Under the guidance of Dona Duncan, artist and registered Art Therapist, practice light mediation and relaxation techniques to cultivate mindfulness, and express your thoughts and feelings through drawing and painting in a non-judgmental atmosphere.  No artistic experience necessary. This live Zoom class will take place every Thursday, 1 - 2:30 p.m.

Plein Air Painting in Donegal, Ireland - LIVE from Home! (ONLINE) PT 605DI_ON

Working from photographs of Donegal, Ireland supplied by instructor Joseph Sweeney, learn how to paint from photo references in preparation for working outdoors. Topics include the basics on choosing a prime location, reading the weather and light at a particular time of day, and setting up a landscape palette.  Drawing, composition, and color will be emphasized.  Instruction is geared towards oil, acrylic, and pastel, but experienced watercolorists are welcome.  This live Zoom course will take place every Thursday, 3 - 4:30 p.m. (See materials list for more information)

Discover they joy of printing on fabric with Lisa Hamilton, master printmaker and Shop Manager of the PAFA Printmaking Department.  This class will introduce students to a variety of low-tech techniques including relief, collograph and stencil that can all be done easily at home without a press or screen with water- or oil-based inks.  Single and repeat designs will be explored. Printing on fabric can be the end result such as a t-shirt or scarf or the starting point for a painting, collage material or sewing into a sculpture.  This is a live Zoom class (See materials list for more information).
