Line Drawing: The Landscape (ONLINE) DR 605EL_ON

Line is the fundamental element in drawing, capable of a wide range of aesthetic possibilities, from describing shape to creating space and atmospheric effects.  Capture the landscape though descriptive and expressive drawn line in this live Zoom class.  Make quick studies from your own photographs and window views, and develop them into finished pieces through impressionistic, calligraphic, cross-hatch, and linear mark-making.  Learn to achieve a variety of effects by using different papers and drawing implements, including pencil, pen, ink and brush, and color pencil.  Find inspiration in references to contemporary and historical artists such as Mondrian, Van Gogh, and Andrew Wyeth.

From newspapers to toys and old clothes, artists use almost any materials for their works. This course will guide you through the endless variety of tools, adhesives and supports available, and how to select which will work best for you. This live Zoom class includes weekly presentations on a variety of subjects related to two- and three-dimensional mixed media, along with exhibition and storage strategies.

 Learning Objectives

  •  Discover materials used in mixed media.
  • Familiarize you with traditional and contemporary materials.
  • Investigate manual and power tools as well as the compatibility of materials and adhesives.
  • Delineate your ideas with the least possible interference from the materials.
  • Learn to construct simple and complex objects.
  • Know terms related to mixed media art.
  • Identify what toxic materials are used by artists, how they are exposed.
  • Learn the risk factors, effects on our bodies, and safety measures.

Hand-Printed Monotype (ONLINE) PR 604EH_ON

Join Tony Rosati, Chair of the PAFA Printmaking Department, from his home studio for this live Zoom monotype class.  Monotypes are unique painterly prints created by painting and drawing with ink on a slick surface and transferring the image onto paper by way of a press or hand printing.  This course will focus on hand-printed methods, introducing students to a variety of additive and subtractive techniques, exploring working in both color and black and white. Mixed media approaches, an array of paper choices, and green cleanup methods will also be presented.

The Artist Book & Sculptural Book Forms (ONLINE)

Explore traditional and novel forms and functions of the book as a means of artistic expression. The artist book, both a visual and linguistic experience, incorporates notions of sequence, repetition, juxtaposition, and duration; and it presents exciting possibilities for creating sculptural/movable forms to augment imagery and textual content. Participants will learn and practice the fundamentals of hand bookbinding, including folded, sewn, and adhesive binding methods. Each class will be dedicated to a new and completed book structure, in order to build a library of models for making unique or editioned artist books.  Live Zoom sessions will take place every Saturday, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
