Students will work from direct observation using still life and human figure/portrait subjects to explore the fundamentals of painting, including the selection and care of materials, paint application techniques, and color mixing. Instruction will emphasize principles of composition, the use of value to create three-dimensional effects, and color relationships. The study of paintings throughout history will foster a greater understanding and appreciation of this medium.
