Pastel is the perfect medium for capturing the subtle colors and contours of the human face. Learn all about the materials, application techniques, and surfaces for soft pastels while building your portraiture skills. Instruction will utilize time-honored methods of working from master copies in limited and full color, as well as the self-portrait or live models. Basic portrait anatomy, proportions, and features, as well as historic and contemporary uses of the medium, will be addressed through presentation, lecture, and demonstration. Live Zoom instruction will be supplemented by assignments and instructor feedback to build your skills and understanding. All levels welcome.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn to use the materials and techniques of traditional soft pastel: with hard, pan and pastel pencil.
  • Students will learn the history and legacy of the pastel medium.
  • Students will learn the safe use of pastel to include alternative wet techniques.
  • Students will learn the proper supports and grounds for various pastels techniques and how to prepare a ground.
  • Students will learn to draw/paint with pastel using limited color through a full palette of color.
  • Students will explore the complexities of texture, gradation, layering and fixing of pastel.
  • Students will learn how to frame, protect, and store pastel drawings.

Take your work to the next level under the guidance of artist/critic/mentor Kassem Amoudi in this live Zoom class.  Expert instruction and advice from the instructor will push you to explore new possibilities and work more intuitively, allowing unplanned marks and passages to become artistic breakthroughs.  Paint from personal subject matter to find your own visual language, informed by examples from contemporary and modern art. Painting experience recommended.  Kassem will begin each class with a slide presentation/lecture focusing on how master artists through history have addressed color, harmony, focal points, space, mark making, paint application, and more, and how to appy these concepts to your own work.

Master the fundamental materials and techniques of acrylic painting in just five weeks! Through a combination of online videos, illustrated lessons, and live Zoom sessions, learn to paint in the alla prima style, apply paint both opaquely and transparently, blend color and value, and employ various layering techniques. Color mixing and theory are also addressed, and a rich resource of information about the wide array of acrylic painting materials is provided. This course is appropriate for students at all levels, including beginners, but drawing experience is recommended.

Oil Painting All Levels (ONLINE) PT 601E_ON (Section 2)

This comprehensive oil painting class presents a wealth of information for students at all levels. Weekly instruction in the form of online video demonstrations, illustrated lessons, and live Zoom sessions is available in the student’s choice of beginner, intermediate, or advanced modules. Students can stay with a single level to progressively build their skills, or they can explore all the levels to pick-and-choose the lessons that best fit their interests or specific needs. The beginner’s module covers basics of alla prima and direct painting. Intermediate instruction focuses on color and the introduction of a wider range of painting methods. Advanced students learn to produce a tonal under-painting, glaze, scumble, and apply a velatura.

Note: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $525.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Beginner Module

  • Introduce alla prima painting techniques.
  • Purpose and how to use a selection of basic materials.
  • Familiarity with the “feel” of oil paints and how to manipulate them.
  • Introduction of a limited palette of colors, their properties, and effect in mixtures.
  • Elements of chiaroscuro and its use in realistic painting.
  • Realistic painting of elemental geometric forms.

Intermediate Module

  • Demonstrate several methods of starting a painting (wipe-out, grisaille, imprimatur, etc.).
  • Color theory with emphasis on complementary and analogous color schemes.
  • Introduce broader range of colors, including transparent pigments.
  • Physical color blending methods.
  • In-depth study of painting mediums and oils and their use.

 Advanced Module

  • The grisaille
  • Optical color mixing with glazes, velaturas, and scumbles
  • Overview of ingredients and recipes for transparent painting techniques
  • Color as a spatial symbol and symbol of illumination
  • Psychology of color
  • Compositional techniques (golden rectangle, composition grids, element relationships and unity)
