Oil Painting Essentials for Beginners (In-Person)

Whether you are just beginning your painting studies or have never picked up a brush, this is the perfect course to build your familiarity and confidence with the techniques and materials of oil painting.  Students will work from direct observation using still life and human figure/portrait subjects to explore the fundamentals of painting, including the selection and care of materials, paint application techniques, and color mixing.  Instruction will emphasize principles of composition, the use of value to create three-dimensional effects, and color relationships.  The study of paintings throughout history will foster a greater understanding and appreciation of this medium. 

Optional: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $675. Select credit option when registering.

Using oil or acrylic paints, exploit a wide range of techniques and artistic languages to transform everyday reality into expressive, symbolic, or personal statements. Base your paintings on unique studio still-life arrangements or use your own photographs as a starting point. Topics discussed and demonstrated include using color as an emotive element, designing compositions to convey mood and movement, and employing energetic mark-making. For less experienced students, materials, color mixing, and basic techniques are also reviewed. 

Course Objectives 

The student will learn… 

  • How to select and use basic materials, including the characteristics of various commonly used colors, solvents, and mediums 
  • To execute a variety of direct and indirect painting methods. 
  • Approaches to interpreting and modifying observed reality to achieve emotive, symbolic, and compositional goals 
  • Descriptive, emotive, and symbolic use of color, shape, and mark 
  • Basic color theory and color mixing

This combination of instructed class and open studio is designed for students interested in advancing their representational drawing and painting.  Design and work on your own personal projects utilizing the cast collection, figure/portrait models, and still life or interior spaces, assisted by individual critiques and group instruction on topics of broad concern or interest.  This course features intermediate-level instruction for students with prior drawing/painting experience.  Note: Tuition includes a $50 model fee. 

Optional: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $1,150 (including model fee). Select credit option when registering.

Beginner's Watercolor Still Life Workshop (Materials Included)

Discover the beauty and versatility of watercolor through colorful and thoughtful still life arrangements. Discussions and in-depth demonstrations will acquaint beginners and those with limited experience with basic watercolor painting materials and techniques. A variety of approaches will be explored, and students will be encouraged to engage with the medium to find their own personal means of expression.  Materials will be supplied to better acquaint newcomers to the practice, but students are welcome to bring their own supplies to gain guidance on, and familiarity with, their use.  Tuition includes a $5 materials fee.
