PAFA’s Open Academy provides the opportunity for Continuing Education (CE) and non-matriculated students to enroll in select BFA courses for credit or non-credit.  Open Academy students enrolled in PAFA’s renowned studio arts courses learn technical skills, creative expression, and critical thinking from master artist-teachers while working amongst dedicated full-time students in PAFA's classrooms.

This course will include drawing, cutting and printing techniques through both hand and press experimentation. It will involve close contact with each student to increase visual challenge and to build awareness of relief possibilities such as: reductive printing, wood engraving, multicolor possibilities, the illustration of a text, the carving of text, production of a book, and work in series.

Optional: This course is available for 1.5 undergraduate credits for $1,400. Select credit option when registering.

Studying from birds, mammals and reptiles, domestic and wild; this course will focus on understanding the science and art of animals with reference to their structure, function, evolution and classifications.  This will act as a foundation in order to understand the movements, forms and anatomy of a particular species.  Perspective, space and composition in landscape and interiors will also be emphasized in relationship to the animals.  Working from life, students will develop a good sense of concentration to see the repetition in movement and form as the basis for drawing.

This course provides a hands-on experience using traditional water-soluble materials, such as watercolor, gouache and ink, and through various dry media, such as graphite, colored pencils, chalk and pastel. There will be ample presentation, lecture and demonstration of the wet/dry media techniques. Students will be expected to provide basic materials that they already have. In order to ensure that all students can experience the various processes, the instructor will provide any materials that individual students do not have. Along with observational study, students will be guided in working from personal sketches, paintings, memory, and photography, as well from recognized artworks. The projects will encourage exploration, and experimentation in individual ways.

Optional: This course is available for 3.0 undergraduate credits for $2,800. Select credit option when registering.

Oil Painting Essentials for Beginners (In-Person)

Whether you are just beginning your painting studies or have never picked up a brush, this is the perfect course to build your familiarity and confidence with the techniques and materials of oil painting.  Students will work from direct observation using still life and human figure/portrait subjects to explore the fundamentals of painting, including the selection and care of materials, paint application techniques, and color mixing.  Instruction will emphasize principles of composition, the use of value to create three-dimensional effects, and color relationships.  The study of paintings throughout history will foster a greater understanding and appreciation of this medium.

Screenprinting and Beyond (In-Person)

Thursdays, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. 

The versatile nature of screenprinting lends itself to printing on paper, fabric and other surfaces. For the beginner, this course will cover all aspects of the process including screen preparation, image development, and printing techniques. Printmakers with experience may propose independent projects.  Note: Tuition includes $20 lab fee. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Students will gain a basic understanding of the screen printing process.  
  • Students will acquire technical experience with screens, squeegees, ink, tools, and equipment.  
  • Students will learn basic screen printing techniques including image development, coating and processing screens, mixing ink, and printing.  
  • Students will acquire technical expertise by way of printing various stencils from fine detail images to flat broad areas.  
  • Students will learn printmaking professionalism including printing editions on clean registered printmaking paper, signing and numbering editions appropriately.  
  • Students will learn the importance of image development through individual reviews and by exploring various possibilities with the process.  
  • Students will develop critical visual and verbal skills by way of individual discussions with the instructor and with their peers.

Foundry: An Introduction/All Levels (In-Person)

This course will cover all aspects of the foundry process. Demonstrations and hands-on instruction will be given in wax modeling and casting, ceramic shell techniques, bronze pouring, metal chasing, TIG welding and patination. All levels welcome.  Note: Tuition includes a $65 lab fee.

Develop a firm foundation in your figure drawing practice with noted artist, educator and author Roberto Osti.  Detailed anatomical instruction will familiarize students with the underlying forms and external effects of the body’s bone and muscle structures.  Sessions in PAFA’s historic Cast Hall will allow study from Antique and Renaissance sculpture to recognize these anatomical effects and explore how they can be used to create beautiful and compelling forms.  Work from life models in short and long poses will further build on this framework to explore the dynamic, gestural, and expressive qualities of the rendered figure. Traditional drawing materials and methods will be demonstrated and practiced, including the use of toned paper, trois crayons, graphite, and charcoal, as well as measuring techniques.  Note: Course tuition includes a $25 model fee. 

Optional: This course is available for 1.0 undergraduate credit for $700 (including model fee). Select credit option when registering.

Using oil or acrylic paints, exploit a wide range of techniques and artistic languages to transform everyday reality into expressive, symbolic, or personal statements. Base your paintings on unique studio still-life arrangements or use your own photographs as a starting point. Topics discussed and demonstrated include using color as an emotive element, designing compositions to convey mood and movement, and employing energetic mark-making. For less experienced students, materials, color mixing, and basic techniques are also reviewed. 

Course Objectives 

The student will learn… 

  • How to select and use basic materials, including the characteristics of various commonly used colors, solvents, and mediums 
  • To execute a variety of direct and indirect painting methods. 
  • Approaches to interpreting and modifying observed reality to achieve emotive, symbolic, and compositional goals 
  • Descriptive, emotive, and symbolic use of color, shape, and mark 
  • Basic color theory and color mixing
